brand spotlight: Leafage

Leafage is one of those brands that’s personality so authentically reflects that of its founder. Young entrepreneur and founder of Leafage, Kay Suppamas, brings her love of nature, big heart and ambition into every aspect of her London based terrarium business. I chatted to Kay about Leafage’s recent rebrand and the impact that Covid has had on the way they now operate.

So Kay, tell us about Leafage.

Hey, I’m Kay the founder of a London based Terrarium brand, Leafage. We help connect people with nature through our hands-on workshops, DIY kits and other curated products, all dedicated to bringing the outside in.

FYI: Terrariums are miniature gardens in a glass container. Low-maintenance and you don’t need to have a garden to own one!

Leafage has recently undergone a bit of a rebrand. (Looks amazing by the way!) How did you find that process? And did the impacts of Covid affect any of your rebranding decisions?

Thank you so much! The rebrand has been in the pipeline since the beginning of January actually. We held off for a bit when Covid first hit us but we wanted to come back stronger, so we went for it!

I worked with my friend, Hannah Strickland, who’s ACE at all-things-design. We started off working on the Brand Strategy so that the next step when we work on the design part we have a bible to go back to and follow through.

Hannah and I have been friends for a long time and she actually worked on the very first Leafage photoshoot back in 2017 too! Getting to level-up our offering with her was pretty special! Hannah knew exactly what I wanted from the get go; something bold and beautiful, just like the terrariums we create.

How would you describe Leafage's new brand style?

Vibrancy and colour
Elegance and minimalism
BAGS of fun!

What makes Leafage worth mentioning?

With constant changes and uncertainty in the past months, we appreciate simple things in life. We appreciate our friends and family. We appreciate nature. We appreciate a healthy mind and body.

Leafage offers people an opportunity to pause and create something new and beautiful with your own hands with our DIY terrarium kit.

Through our virtual workshop, we bring friends, family and team members together to reconnect, recharge and rediscover something new through nature and terrarium making.

You've done an amazing job of growing Leafage since you founded it in 2017. What would you say is most important when building a successful brand?

Curiosity, discipline, resilience and consistency.

Learn to have fun, learn from your mistakes and build meaningful relationships along the way are important to me.

The future for a lot of businesses is now online. As IRL workshops were a big part of Leafage, what changes have you had to make to the way you operate and has this affected any future Leafage plans?

We had to pivot the business completely from the lockdown. I’ve been meaning to launch our ecommerce site for a long while so it was strangely a perfect opportunity to do so. I have learned so much in such a short space of time. From hosting a virtual workshop on Zoom for the first time to working out how to use a thermal printer for our labels...the list goes on!

Everything that we built through the lockdown will be here to stay so I’m grateful for all the ups and downs along the way.
